About

Our Mission

The Pi Chapter of Sigma Chi seeks to embody the original idea of a Fraternity. Our mission manifests from the goal of building our Brothers throughout their undergraduate studies into values-based and service-oriented leaders. Through cultivating leaders of principle, the Fraternity ultimately commits itself to the betterment of Samford University and to the communities that each Brother will one day call home.

J. Dwight Peterson Significant Chapter Award

The Peterson Significant Chapter Award, sponsored annually by the Sigma Chi Foundation, is the highest honor that the Fraternity bestows upon an undergraduate chapter. Named for 38th Grand Consul J. Dwight Peterson, INDIANA 1919, the award recognizes excellent, but not impossible, performance by chapters in all major areas of operation and programming. For many years, the Peterson plaque has been a symbol of dedication, idealism and achievement.

The Pi Chapter is proud to have been awarded the J. Dwight Peterson Award four out of the past five school years (2017-2018, 2018- 2019, 2020-2021, 2021-2022).

2020-2021 Legion of Honor Award

This past 2020-2021 school year, the Pi Chapter was awarded the Legion of Honor Award which is given to the top 5 Sigma Chi chapters in the United States based on academic achievement.

History

Founded in 1872, the Pi Chapter of Sigma Chi is one of the oldest and most prestigious Chapters in the nation. After Samford banned all Greeklife organizations in the 1880’s, the Pi Chapter did not have any new members until 1984 when a group of freshmen students, disillusioned with other Greeklife opportunities on campus, decided to re-found the Chapter. Led by Brother John Lankford, these modern founders sought to return Greeklife on Samford’s campus to the original idea of what a Fraternity should manifest into: a place that sought to gather Samford’s best values-based leaders to live in faithful accountability and friendship together. While the Pi Chapter has not always achieved this goal, we hold ourselves to the standards set forth by the founders of the Fraternity and the Pi Chapter. It is our hope to live lives of courage, wisdom, integrity, high ambition, self-control, courtesy, and fidelity to ever prove a credit to Samford and Sigma Chi.
